K-State fan's estate plan supports marching band leaders

Ray Navarro created a scholarship for the K-State Marching Band.

Some might think of Ray Navarro as impatient. Truth be told, he's more passionate than impatient. Navarro created a scholarship for the K-State Marching Band percussion leaders through a gift in his estate plan. Interested in making a difference sooner than later, he also decided to fund his scholarship now with annual gifts.

"It was extremely easy and remarkably meaningful to create an estate plan," Navarro said. "But I wanted to support the Pride of Wildcat Land now, so I added to my estate plan gift with annual gifts supporting up to seven students each year."

Estate gifts through a will or trust are among the most popular ways alumni and friends invest in Kansas State University. That popularity is based on simplicity, flexibility, and perhaps most importantly, the opportunity to make a difference without making a sacrifice. Donors retain lifetime control of their assets, creating a plan now and funding it later.

Navarro said it has been very rewarding to support K-State in two ways, through current annual gifts and deferred gifts in his estate plan.

"Because I'm supporting scholarships now, I've gotten to know many great students and gained so much more than I've given," he said. "My annual gifts help me create relationships with percussion leaders, and my estate plan will permanently endow the scholarship."
